when it rains, it portlands

when it rains, it portlands

when it rains, it portlands by brooke-l-smith

My favorite San Diegan, Kailyn, is coming to visit this weekend. Let's hope this So-Cal girl is ready for Portland weather! Fingers crossed it doesn't rain, but if not she will quickly get used to the fact that Oregonians refuse to use umbrellas. Hope she packed a jacket with a hood ;)

Cheers to Portlandia!

Healthy Treats From Your Favorite Lumber Jack

Do you ever have one of those mornings where you start with a cute outfit, but then by the time you add layer after layer it is no longer cute?  That was me this morning.  Started with a simple outfit of black skinnies, cute glittery black flats (similar), and a white tee (best v-neck ever).  By the time I was out the door I had added a flannel, scarf, and puffy down vest over top.  Something went wrong, I now look like a lumber jack, a sexy one not actually sexy, but a lumber jack none the less. I blame February.

In other news, this awesome place by my apartment called Uptown Market - which features beer galore, wine, and home brewing supplies - just got a new espresso bar and in celebration they are offering 1 dollar coffee drinks all week.  So, I obviously had to stop and get one. If you live in the Beaverton area you should totally support local and go here.  They have usually have around 6 beers on tap and a ton of other options to purchase, as well as wine and now coffee, too!  Plus, they often have a food truck in their parking lot and events (like trivia) in the evenings.

Yes, i know that daily calendar pic is from Jan. 2nd and no, I don't care. How presh is the photo?!

Now, onto the good stuff!!!!! Today, I have not one, but two healthy treats for you!!!!! I tested them both out this weekend and they are super easy to make and even more awesome to eat.

First up we have a 2 ingredient 'cookie'.  It's awesome (if you're into naners, that is). Here is the recipe I followed.

{What You Need}

::2 quite ripe bananas
::1 cup of oats (I used the old fashioned kind)

::Technically those are the only ingredients you need, but you can add whatever fun extras you would like, such as: dark chocolate chips, cinnamon, honey, etc.

{What You Do}

::Pre-heat oven to 350
::Mash together
::Bake for 15 mins

Always buy your honey in bear form.

I pre-mashed my bananas a little bit before I added the oats so everything would mix a little more easily.

Next, mix in all your goodies until the bananas are pretty gooey. This way everything will stick together when they bake.

Pre-oven.

Got that little sign for Bradley on Valentine's Day! And if you know me, that is saying a lot. I LOVE BACON.

Post-oven goodness!

For the second treat, my cousin, Kyndra, and I made No-Bake Energy Bites on Monday while I was busy being a Stay-At-Home-GF.

I didn't take step by step pics, but here are the basics:

{What You Need}

::1 cup oats
::1/2 cup chocolate chips
::1/2 cup peanut butter
::1/2 cup ground flaxseed
::1/3 cup honey
::1 tsp. vanilla

{What You Do}

Mix everything together, let it chill in the fridge for a half and hour.  Roll the mixture into little balls with your hands and your finished product should look something like this:

ballz! Photo cred - Kyndra!

Enjoy!!!!

My Thoughts On The Grammys...

Because you're all dying to know them.

Oh The Grammys.  You annoy me every year and yet I still come back like a Cyndi Lauper song - time after time. The awards are given to old, over played songs and albums.  Most often, they go to the overrated artists. How was Call Me Maybe even nominated for an award?! The live acts are very hit and miss and most of all - acceptance speeches are painful to watch. With that being said, there were still a few highlights, as well as my favorite lowlights.

First off - you made me stay up so late just to hear your Bob Marley tribute and it wasn't even that good.  Allen Stone did a much better job and he isn't even nominated for best new artist. Cryin' Shame.

TSwift, sorry, but you're annoying. You should also not be allowed to dance to reggae music.

Adele, you are always my favorite. Cheeky is probably the best way to describe your greatness.

JLo, we have discussed this before.  We get it. You're hot for 40 don't actually know her age and am too lazy to Google but please stop dressing like a whore.

Overall, I was not impressed with the fashion at the Grammy's this year, maybe it was because there was a dress code for the evening.  Rumor on the street was no side boob was allowed. Don't worry, most still found a way to slut it up, I am looking at you Katy Perry.

Speaking of fashion - JT is back wearing his suit and tie, being sexy as ever.

Frank Ocean ran the Grammys, just like Forest Gump. See what I did there? It's the title of his song.

PS. How pretty is Frank Ocean's Mom?

It was a good night for the Urban Contemporary boys, because that is evidently what the Grammys call R&B, the hell?  Miguel, has a beautiful voice, I wish he had had more time to show everyone, Frank Ocean won a few awards, and Chris Brown didn't win sheeeeet. Hooray!

Really this is the only way to highlight the Grammys.  In gif form.

Is anyone else tired from staying up late to watch the boring Grammys?

My Thoughts On The Golden Globes

When I was little, anytime an uncomfortable moment would come on during Full House I would hide behind a pillow or leave the room.  I am not sure why I did this, but my guess is because I feel their pain when it comes awkward situations.  I hate the feeling of being uncomfortable.   It makes me cringe when I witness other people being awkward.  Take for instance when Brad walked into Big Al's for his birthday dressed in women's jean capris, a mickey mouse tee, ugly hat, and denim vest, I died a little inside.

Anyways, that is how I felt watching 97% of the acceptance speeches last night on the Golden Globes.  Why are people so bad at acceptance speeches! I mean, I get it, it's a big deal, you didn't expect to win, you're excited, you don't want to forget anyone, blah, blah, blah....BUT instead of trying to remember each and every person you worked with on the set, and every distant relative that has helped you along the way, why not keep it short and sweet like Adele did. Something along the lines of, thanks to everyone in my life that has made this moment come true. Boom, done. Accepted.

Also, don't even get me started on Jodie Foster.... UGH that was painful.  At one point Brad looked over at me and asked why I was literally hiding behind the pillow.  Seriously though, someone should have started the get your ass of the stage music on her, I don't care if it was her moment.  She did the opposite of shine.

Overall, I thought Tina Fey and Amy Poehler did a solid job hosting, there were definitely some funny moments.  I think the best line of the night was the unscripted moment when Tina comment on Girls star and winner Lena Dunham's speech about how Tina and Amy helped her through middle school.  Tina: "Yeah - I got you through middle school - FANTASTIC!" as she takes a drink.

There is that fine line when it comes to being funny and just plain dumb when you present an award or host a show like this and Tommy Lee Jones was not impressed with any of it, especially Will Farrell and Kristen Wiig:  I died when they showed him in the audience.  I am glad the rest of the internet picked up on it too.

Tommy Lee Jones is not amused.

When it came to fashion there were a few loves and a few hates, but over all I thought it was a fairly tame evening in the world of red carpet affairs.

These were my top misses:

I don't get this look.  Why does the dress end at your ankles awkwardly.  Why do the sleeves cut off like an 8th grade boy's gym shirt? Also, might want to try smiling, Kerri.

We know, we know, JLo, you have a nice backside.   For God's sake though, quit drawing even more attention to it.

Haley, I get it.  You've got nicer legs at age 46 then I do at 24, but seriously.  You look a little slutty for my taste. Let's tone it down a bit shall we?

And a few of my favs

Katniss Jennifer Lawrence, I love you. You can do no wrong in my eyes. ... and I know I am not the only curious one - are you and Bradley Cooper, you know, dating?! I would be so jealous of both of you if you are.

Jessica Alba, you're pretty and married to JT.  I think you should only get to be one or the other, but not both. It's not fair to the rest of us.

Update:  She is not the Jessica that married JT.  My apologies, to Jessica Biel.  (Thanks, Josh for the correction).

Obviously this is what they wore during the days of Downton Abbey.

Big fan of Jennifer Westfeldt's dress... or maybe her husband...

After 3 hours of the Golden Globes I wondered why I put myself through it.  I do this every time after an awards show, which is why I usually only make it through the first half an hour. More often than not I get bored and then just check out the pretty dresses online the next day, which is probably what I will end up doing for the Oscars.

Cheers to awards shows!

Hitting the Links

Today's Highlights:

::It's Friday! Cheers to that!
::There was freezing fog in Portland this morning.  Not sure that technically counts as a highlight, maybe more of nature doing its thing and I found it interesting.  Nature, you be crazy.
::I was proud of myself for being smart and starting my car a few mins before I actually left for work so it was nice and toasty when I got in it. (Small details: I was still 10 mins late to work, but in my defense 10 mins late is pretty much on time at my office. The 7am start time is a little early for some of us here at the office.)

Anyways, here are some links I have been collecting throughout the week. I find them entertaining and I hope you do too!

What happened to down time?

My kind of sports story. Oregon's very own Rudy, anyone?!

I beg of you, please don't ever be any of these couples on Facebook.

This is one of my favorite things Jimmy Kimmel does. There are two others you should probably watch. Here and Here.

Really want my new booties (on sale!) to be here already! I have been stalking the tracking number all week.  Their last check in was Hodgkins, IL. I didn't even know that was a real place.  The Midwest is weird.

Think I might make this over the weekend.

My girl, ZZ Ward played on Conan last night.  #teamcoco.   I wonder if she got to meet Ryan Gosling while she was there?  Jelly if she did.

Need to buy this game. So.Much.Fun.

Bradley and I are slowly starting to plan a small vaca for Memorial Day Weekend, but now I think I want to go to one of these places instead. #travelenvy

Enjoy your weekend.  I am going to daydream about traveling ... diligently work the rest of the day!

Cheers,

Fashion Blog Rant of the Week

In today's Fashion Blog Rant of the Week we will be discussing the half smile.  You know the one I am talking about - teeth awkwardly not showing - you often ask yourself the following questions when looking at the picture:

-is she doing duck face?
-do you need to use the restroom?
-are you confused?
-are you missing teeth?
-did you just smell something horrible?

And before you call me out and stop following my blog because I am a hypocrite, due to the fact that I have posted pictures of me making that same face:

Totally smizing, so it makes it ok.  ANTM, anyone?

 hear me out....

Sometimes I think it works.  I think a person can pull it off if they are still smiling with the rest of their face - if that makes sense.  And by that I mean, if there is still some happiness in their eyes, the smile is a genuine, caught in the moment smirk that matches the rest of their mood then I support it.  Like the below photo:

Also, you should know I like to put myself in the same category as an Olsen twin any chance I get.

Or like this, when he smirks straight into my soul.

See, Sydney looks adorable even with the bright lips and a no teeth smile.

However, with that being said, I think a lot of fashion bloggers often times get carried away.  It becomes super forced looking and uncomfortable for all those involved.

I will be the first to admit I have a huge style crush on Sydney from The Daybook, but even she can go a little overboard with the no teeth smile.

Watch out, it can give you the crazy eyes.

Then there is my girl Kendi.  Super cute everyday type style, but honey let's be honest, this no teeth smile is not a good look for you.

Are you lost in a back alley? Do you need me to send you directions?
I know the new iPhone maps are still a little bit of a struggle, so I don't blame you for the confused look.

Natalie from Nat the Fat Rat gets caught using the halfsies smile when a real smile might have been the more obvious choice:

Are you angry that someone is forcing the cupcake on you?  Because honey, you do not look amused.

Down to earth Oregon native Molly from the Urban Nester is obviously unhappy with her coffee:

Did it burn your lips?

Next we have Rachel from Pink Peonies:

Then again, I think I might have been a little uncomfortable wearing that outfit too.

Essentially, what I am trying to say is: try not to get caught in the land of in-between if you can help it. SHOW OFF THOSE PEARLY WHITES!

 Let me see your grill!

Andddd if you must pull a halfsies, make sure it's genuine and it doesn't looks like you are about to pee your pants. it's a very fine line, people....

hold it for just a tad longer, hun

Cheers to Smizing!

Hey You Guyyyys

Guess what!   I finally went MAXI!!  You know how I have been obessed with trying to find a maxi dress?  Welllll, I finally broke down last night and got a maxi, however, it is a skirt, not a dress.  Found this Bobeau maxi at Nordstrom Rack for under $25.00 and just couldn't pass it up.  It is seriously the most comfortable item in my closet, plus I don't have to shave my legs (the lazy in me is rejoicing)!

Today I am pairing it with a J. Crew button down I bought at the Woodburn Outlets a few summers ago and some flat sandals, and gave it a little pop with a statement piece necklace I scored on sale at Kohl's and my fun, boyfriend style watch I got from Urban Outfitters.  I am also rocking my glasses today, because I am fighting a cold and it makes my eyeballs feel heavy, so I decided to make them happy and leave the contacts in their case.

This outfit is super casual, yet pulled together enough I can wear it to work, plus the long skirt makes me feel feminine, which is an added bonus, since my boss gave me a hard time yesterday for sounding like a man... Just call me, Bob, not Brooke, for the next few days. - Thanks a lot, cold.

I put together a little style board below of what my look is doing today.  Not all the items are the same as what I am sporting, but they are super similar.

Cheers to Maxis!

Birthday Wishlist

So going along with birthday week, I wanted to share with you my wishlist in clothes form.  Still trying to find the perfect maxi -which is harder than it sounds.  Every one I have tried on is either too short, or too cottonie, too expensive, or just not cute on me.  I am determined to find one though.  I am also saving up my monies for this Madewell Cambray shirt.  Went into the store this weekend when I was in Seattle.  Told myself I couldn't try anything on otherwise I would have bought everything in the store.  Love that place! Lack self control!
