when it rains, it portlands

when it rains, it portlands by brooke-l-smith

My favorite San Diegan, Kailyn, is coming to visit this weekend. Let's hope this So-Cal girl is ready for Portland weather! Fingers crossed it doesn't rain, but if not she will quickly get used to the fact that Oregonians refuse to use umbrellas. Hope she packed a jacket with a hood ;)

Cheers to Portlandia!

Does This Make Me A Cheater?

So....Confession.  I am getting my hair done this week and it isn't by my normal stylist.  Brad says it makes me a Stylist Cheater and he is probably right he also supported me saving money, so I am confused by his reaction.  I have been going to the same gal for about a year now and she is super sweet and I have liked what she has done with my hair each time, but yesterday I gave in and bought a Groupon for a new place.

Honestly, though can you really blame me?!  Highlights and a cut are super, unnecessarily expensive these days.  Broke girl's gotta do, what a broke girl's gotta do.

I know this probably makes me a bad person in the land of hair care, but I just couldn't turn it down.  I am going to a place called One Creativity & Design and it has received good reviews on Yelp. Plus, they are receiving extra points in my book, because I had purchased a Groupon deal that had to be used by 8pm on Sunday or you get a refund.  Well, the salon was full when I called on Sunday, BUT they said they would still honor my deal later this week.  Sounds like good business practice / customer service, if you ask me.

And I know I should feel bad about not giving my business to the other gal, but when it costs $100.00+ to do my hair and I can pay $50 for $100 worth of hairdid, I am going to cheat.

Blame it on the terrorists or the crappy economy, or dare I say it, Christmas time! Either way, this girl is saving 50 dollars and that is 50 dollars I can put to good use!

Which leads me to my next more important question: what do I want my color to look like?!

Do I want to go blonde-blonde or mix in a little bit of a low-light for the winter months (then I can go longer without getting a touch up!) Saving money like a boss.

Here are some of the options I am looking at:

This combo would let me buy more time in between hairdids!

Since Cameron is my girl crush, I could rock her high and low/lights.

This schmedium blonde might be a great choice.

Super blonde in top knot form.

Decisions, decisions!

Cheers to hairdids!

Blogger Style, WTF?

Before you get ahead of yourself, this is not an outfit post. You will not see what I am wearing today.  Sorry to make you sad, because I know you are just dying to see my face and outfits on the regs.

What this post is about though, is blogger fashion.  I recently read two very similar posts.  The first was from Raven, from Don't Quote the Raven.  In her post, I Dress For Men, she talks about how a lot of men, especially her husband do not like blogger fashion trends.  The second post was from a gal named Jenni, over at Story of My Life, who had also read Raven's post.  Her's was titled How Far Would You Go To Please Your Man?.  Here she discusses how she had recently gotten in a fight with her husband over her style and how she was offended that he did not like a lot of the trends that she wears.

Both of these posts got me thinking about my own style.  When I get dressed each morning I'd like to think I am getting dressed for myself.  However, I know on some large level I am dressing for others.  I obviously want Brad to find me pretty and want him to think it's okay to be seen in public with me, but let's be real... a lot of the time I get dressed for the ladies.  In my scientific research I did for this post: men found 87% of current style trends to be laughable, because when it comes down to it, most trends are quite mockable.  Now don't get me wrong, I love me some cardigans and maxis, and I secretly love the fact that the top knot is now considered fashionable (yay for not having to actually do my hair). I think that last one is more because I am lazy and less because I actually think it's fashionable, but who's comparing?

As much as I love daily fashion blogs, I have mocked them on my blog before here with this link. There are a lot of pins on Pinterest and outfits from fashion bloggers that make me ask, did you really wear that in public?   Do you actually think those articles of clothing go together?  Take this outfit for example:

My good friend Jessi and I were just mocking this outfit yesterday.  Is she half bird / half 1970s gym teacher? I am not really sure what's going on there, but I am not a fan.

Then we have the red lipstick trend.  I personally am not a fan of lipstick.  I think it has to due with the fact that my lips are plenty big already, I don't need to draw more attention to them.  Chapstick, however, is a whole different story.  Can't get enough chapstick. Now, Brad hates lipstick.  He, essentially, thinks it makes women look like clowns.  Nothing funny about that, if you ask me.

Hate to break it to you miss, but you look like an old librarian.... and that is not a compliment.  I do, however, like your polka-dots though! So there's that?

Next, we have the statement piece necklace.  I love a little bling around my neck.  I think a necklace can really tie an outfit together, but the question is how much is too much necklace.  I mean seriously, lady you're going to have back problems at this rate:

Next we have the top knot:

When does it go from cute knot, to swirled turd knot?  Fine line ladies, fine line.

I guess what I  am trying to say is, be careful when it comes to fashion trends.  If you want to rock one, I say go for it, but just make sure you are dressing for yourself and not because Kendi Everyday wore something similar, so it automatically makes it okay.  I may also suggest attempting one trend at a time.

Lastly, don't fall victim to the everyday fashion police: one of my sister's comments about a maxi dress I tried on, 'You look like a pilgrim on Thanksgiving.  Are you headed out to churn your butter?' Needless to say that dress was not purchased and it made me realize: just because it's a fashion trend, doesn't make it a good trend.

Cheers to Pilgrims!

Hey You Guyyyys

Guess what!   I finally went MAXI!!  You know how I have been obessed with trying to find a maxi dress?  Welllll, I finally broke down last night and got a maxi, however, it is a skirt, not a dress.  Found this Bobeau maxi at Nordstrom Rack for under $25.00 and just couldn't pass it up.  It is seriously the most comfortable item in my closet, plus I don't have to shave my legs (the lazy in me is rejoicing)!

Today I am pairing it with a J. Crew button down I bought at the Woodburn Outlets a few summers ago and some flat sandals, and gave it a little pop with a statement piece necklace I scored on sale at Kohl's and my fun, boyfriend style watch I got from Urban Outfitters.  I am also rocking my glasses today, because I am fighting a cold and it makes my eyeballs feel heavy, so I decided to make them happy and leave the contacts in their case.

This outfit is super casual, yet pulled together enough I can wear it to work, plus the long skirt makes me feel feminine, which is an added bonus, since my boss gave me a hard time yesterday for sounding like a man... Just call me, Bob, not Brooke, for the next few days. - Thanks a lot, cold.

I put together a little style board below of what my look is doing today.  Not all the items are the same as what I am sporting, but they are super similar.

Cheers to Maxis!

Birthday Wishlist

So going along with birthday week, I wanted to share with you my wishlist in clothes form.  Still trying to find the perfect maxi -which is harder than it sounds.  Every one I have tried on is either too short, or too cottonie, too expensive, or just not cute on me.  I am determined to find one though.  I am also saving up my monies for this Madewell Cambray shirt.  Went into the store this weekend when I was in Seattle.  Told myself I couldn't try anything on otherwise I would have bought everything in the store.  Love that place! Lack self control!
