I confess: name is brooke

And I am addicted to sugar. I figured this was a perfect humpday confession and Kat is always one to support being healthy because she is rocking that fitness boner. I came to the realization the other day when I ran out of Trader Joe's peanut butter mini cups and had a slight breakdown. I proceeded to have this conversation after I sent the below photo to Brad with the caption - they are all gone, tear :(

Me: I would like to admit out in the open that I am officially addicted to sugar I think. Right now all I want are PB minis and I don't have any left. I am sad...but actually happy because they won't go to my back fat...but mostly sad because I miss them.

Brad: hahaha

me: it's pretty obviously that I crave sugar at some point every day. I should do that 21 day sugar detox thing or something.

Brad: yeah probably not a bad thing. I think that's why I eat so much fruit. I'd rather get natural sugars

me: BUT I DON'T EVEN HAVE ANY FRUIT RIGHT NOW

So, I am admitting to the internet that I have a small addiction. Here's the thing, it's not that I eat large amounts of sugar all the time, but I do have some form of it daily. Whether it is a handful or two of PB minis or chocolate covered almonds, a trip to fro-yo after a hard day, going out to eat on the weekend and having dessert.
Why do you taste so good in my fro-yo, oreos and golden grams?!

It's not a lot, but it is enough that I need to cut back. It is counteracting all of the good things I do when it comes to my fitness and that's not fun. Now I am not saying I plan to give up sugar forever (especially natural sugars from fruit), but what I do want to accomplish is to stop having cravings at 3pm as I sit at the office or right after dinner when I think some chocolate sounds good.

I was able to get a copy of the 21-Day Sugar Detox and it is more or less what I try to already do with my daily diet, just a little more structure. Plus, it will help keep me accountable. So far, I have gone 3 days without sugar (minus a green smoothie this morning - but that's natural sugar and I don't feel that bad about it).

One of my favorite things so far is that the program has a lot of fun recipes to try and posts additional ones on pinterest too. I am always down to get more creative with my meals. Breakfast will be the hardest for me, because I usually eat oatmeal at the office and that is on hold for a bit, but if I can be a little more proactive and make breakfast ahead of time, I should be golden!

Cheers!

Oh wow, this sounds familiar. I tried to go without candy for ONE DAY and ate a granola bar with chocolate chips in it. Intervention, please.

I always finish the mini pb's and wonder why the container isn't bigger / why I can't buy them in bulk.

Green smoothies in the morning have been a game changer for me! That and protein shakes at lunch. shake shake shake!

I can't even imagine doing this which I think is a sign I need to.

Funny you post this today, Isaiah and I just decided to give up artificial sugars as of yesterday. We're not being CRAZY strict about it but we're avoiding it if at all possible. No more desserts, no more snacks with tons of added sugar, and we're trying to only buy things with natural sugars (agave, fruit is obviously fine, etc). Day 2 and so far no cravings...but I know by day 5 I'll be about in tears. We need a support group, amiright?

Self proclaimed sugar girl here as well. Really trying to ease up before my glucose test. Last thing I want to worry about!

Everything is my weakness but sugar, specifically chocolate, is the biggest one. I have been trying to drink water when I want it and it isn't working. I try not to keep it around but there are always treats in my office coming to sabotage my willpower!

I can so relate to this because I am literally a sugar addict as well! I actually did the 21 Day Sugar Detox last January and it was pretty tough but a very eye-opening experience! (There's a post on my blog about it somewhere from last year, btw) It's very extreme and I didn't really like that it cut out fruit, but I sucked it up and did it...it was challenging going out to eat and it really makes you realize just how much sugar you do eat. I did feel like afterward that things tasted SO much sweeter, seriously fruit tasted like candy after not really having it for 21 days! However, I will say it DEFINITELY did NOT permanently curb my sugar addiction at all and I still eat it/crave it just as much as I did before. Whomp whomp. Good luck though!

After my 3-day smoothie detox last weekend, my sugar cravings went down. I even tried eating cake after it was over, and the cake was too sweet for me! Since then, I've been going for healthier snacks/sweets. I made almond butter cookies (with brown sugar, no flour), and my afternoon snack is now celery with almond butter (maybe I've replaced my sugar addiction with almond butter addiction). I still have my daily piece of chocolate after lunch, but it's usually super dark anyway (85% cacao- I like chocolate, coffee, and beer to be dark as heck). And, I'm still doing smoothies (with no added sweetener- it's really not needed when fruit is involved). That's my 2 cents, for what it's worth. I hope you get what you want out of your detox. :)

I was about to whine about how good that froyo looks cuz I'm on day 2 of no sugar but then I realized you're feeling to pain too. Let's cry together, friend. (No, really, I burst into tears earlier and I think it's purely from lack of sugar)

I'm a sugar addict too. I actually tried going off sugar for a while, because my friend wanted to do the carb-free diet and begged me to do it with her. I felt really good, actually... but my friend gave in first, and then she stuck a Dr. Pepper in front of me and begged me to drink it so she wouldn't feel so bad! PEER PRESSURE!

Kait said...

you're welcome ;)

that was my only hangup with the 21 day SD - the lack of fruit. since i finished (in september) I've tried to stick to a similar diet, but implemented more fruit. I also found it interesting that the fruits with lowest amounts of sugar are green apples and slight green bananas.

MMMM gimme that green banana I wanna chow down on that.

said no one, ever.

I've cut way back on my sug intake. But I could still do better. I probably need to do that detox stat. The cravings for peanut m&ms in the afternoon are the worst lol.
