confessions of a weekend food binger

Today for humpday confessions with Kathy we are talking about my weakness. It's a problem. Some might even call it an addiction that might be a stretch. It's not drugs or alcohol or anything like that...BUT it is still not a good thing. Today we are talking about Confessions of a Weekend Binge Eater

That would be me. I am a struggle on the weekends. Here is the thing. I am fairly healthy. During the week I bring my lunches to work. I make my dinners at home. I work out at least 4 days during the work week. I am a healthy person overall. But come weekend. I kind of lose some of my healthy habits. Mostly the eating habits. We tend to save our 'going out to eat' for the weekend. I tend to get a little lax with the food choices I make. Take last weekend for instance. Let's talk about what I ate in one day....one day, people!

Nachos
Chili Cheese Fries
Chicken Strips
Regular Fries
Meat Balls
Beer

Ugh, just typing that is embarrassing to me. *hangs head in shame* It is not even that I am embarrassed of eating unhealthy food. That will happen, it is ok to not have a perfect diet. It's the fact that once I go for something unhealthy I eat all the unhealthy foods. all of them.

So, here is what I am trying to do. I am going to try and be less binge-y (that is probably not a word, but I am using it anyway) on the weekends. I don't want to feel guilty for the poor choices I may make. I don't want to feel like I am playing catch-up every week with my workouts and my eating after the poor choices I made.

Now, I am not saying I will never eat unhealthy foods again. Because that is not realistic or fun. Food is delicious and life is short. What I am going to try and do instead is to be smarter with the weekend choices I make. Instead of eating every item of food on the bar's menu...maybe just pick one, Brooke? Or if I decide to eat an unhealthy meal, make sure the other meals of my day are a better option... Basically, what I am saying is I need to cut myself some slack and not feel bad about eating poor foods once in a while, but also not let one meal derail me and give me the excuse to make poor choices the rest of the weekend.

This week I decided to start tracking my meals and what not in the myfitnesspal app. which is a first for me. I don't normally count calories and to be honest I am not using this app to start counting calories. What I am using it for is to track patterns, see what my meals are made of, pay attention to the amount of food I am actually eating, etc. It's annoying and addicting at the same time. We'll see how long this lasts.

Anyways, I figured why not be honest on the blog with you guys. I know I talk a lot about being healthy and active and working out...which are all things I do and really enjoy, but I also don't want to create this false idea that I am perfect with my choices. I don't always have self control and that is ok.

Cheers!

YUMYUMYUM [minusthebeer]!

Sometimes you need a RESET weekend or day! MFP is super helpful in understanding how much you are consuming, so you can plan your cheat pieces throughout the week.

i'm a huge advocate of eating healthy but when i want to stuff my foodhole with beer or chocoate covered almonds or whatever, you damn straight i'll do it and regret nothing. like you said, ONE DAY wont' do a thing; it's consistent stuffing of foodhole shenanigans that will really make a negative impact.

thanks for linking up!

SO guilty of this! And I can't just have one bad thing. If I have one bad thing, I just figure my day is shot anyway so I splurge the rest of the day and then feel horrible. My Fitness Pal is great though. I don't pay too close attention to calories either but am more concerned about my carb and sugar intake. It is so helpful to know where you are and what you eat. Good luck!

Cheers,
Alyson

This is my issue too!!! I totally binge eat all the bad things on the weekends. I have GOT to stop it!!! I stepped on the scale this morning and was so mad at myself. I was all...but I do so good and work out so much. Then I was all...well Nadine...you ate fries, cheeseburgers, fried shrimp and drank beer all on Saturday...what do you expect. Gosh!

Im so similar to you in this regard! I like your idea of using myfitnesspal to figure out your patterns, etc. I might have to take a page out of your book :)

PREACH. It always happens. Always.

I'm the least healthy eater ever and I applaud you for being able to do it any days at all!

Kate @ Another Clean Slate said...

I usually like to go out to eat one night a weekend at least too. And if I am paying for food at a restaurant I want to get more than lettuce!

I used MyFitnessPal for a few weeks and I really liked it! I've gotten lazier lately, but it still showed me things about my diet that I didn't know. Like my protein and fat intake were always low and completely out of proportion to sugar. So now I can make better choices even if I don't use the app.

P.S. I know binging is bad, but it's so enjoyable! And technically you're less likely to gain weight from one day a week of massive overeating, than everyday with a little overeating. Because there's a cap at the amount of calories we can actually process in one day. (so I've read)

Weekends are def tough for me too! Tracking meals is a good idea and something i'm going to do as well!

I wish I could help you with this but I'm the same way. And although I used to feel guilty, I've stopped caring. Food is delicious and I don't want to feel bad about enjoying it. Sure, I may only live till 70 because of it, but at least I got to eat ALL the cake. Nom nom nom.

but is that all you ate in one day, or just in one sitting? i'm trying to say this is ok, or that 'well i'm better at being worse' but i legit had a binge eating problem and it put yours to shame. like 10 times that, no exaggeration, and within one hour or so, and then i would throw it all up (not on purpose, because that much food will make anyone throw up).
i used myfitnesspal for quite awhile, and really enjoyed it but then i enjoyed it too much and i was trying to eat under 1000 calories a day. oops.
anyway. i ramble a lot, i know. but like you said, one day won't do anything, and that you realise you do it should help you change. and yes, life is short and food is delicious :)

i'm NOT trying, not I'm trying. jeez.

Well thank you for sharing, you are definitely NOT alone girl. I'm often exactly the same. I normally eat very good throughout the week but then sometimes binge on the weekends. Now, I am someone who totally believes in indulging and not depriving, with balance. It works for me. BUT when I make myself sick from it, I just feel dumb. I don't care in a way of "oh no I can't gain a pound" I care in a way of "I binge and my body literally feels like crap", like spend a day recovering. This is what I am trying to work on... Getting the real balance thing figured out better haha

This is me so hard. Monday thru Friday it's homemade salads and sandwiches. Saturday and Sunday it's hot dogs, nachos, all of the pizza, reese's cups and dunkin. I think what this REALLY tells us is that we need to spread our binging out through the entire week, right? ;)

I'm the same in that if I slip up once I treat it as license to say "screw it" — this happens with my budget mostly though, ugh. Oh and that Louis CK bit is one of my favorite things

Oh my gosh, Haha.

LOL I just started using my MyFitnessPal app again too! They've allowed me to have 1,390 cals per day. My reaction? I'm going to die of starvation and my cats will find me hanging halfway out of my freezer.

I'm not a healthy person but I am trying really hard but my fear is definitely how will I handle the weekends when there is less structure to my day... *sigh* First World Problems, I guess ;)

I think it's so weird how your body and taste buds change as adults. If you would have told me a few years ago that one of my favorite things was grilled veggies I would not have believed you.

Why does junk food have to taste so fucking good dammit?!

JumpingJE said...

But that's such a good idea to make the weekends a focus! It's easy to do during the work week. Beer why do you make me make bad choices????

Jess said...

It is so hard to hold back on the weekends!! I don't really hold back that much x). I do the same thing, mostly healthy during the week, and we go out on the weekends. Although I don't drink beer, so that part is easy to eliminate. But give me a bowl full of sweet potato fries..

Chelsea @ Delipsch said...

I totally feel ya! Weekends can be a food trap (I am the same way, once I eat 1 thing bad, I basically tell myself that anything is fair game, opps!)...but you got this...I like to save my more indulgent meals for the later part of the day/weekend (Saturday night or Sunday) so I am refreshed and motivated for Monday! Cheers to being healthy all over!

Jess said...

Everyone needs a little junk food from time to time. If you dont let yourself have it sometimes thats all you're going to want to eat! You cant cut it out totally and be sane.

Amanda Nicole said...

I definitely understand the weekend binge eating. But it's actually good for you if done in moderation. I wrote an entire post on it actually.

If it makes you feel better I have been binge eating like that for the past three weeks.. and the results of that are heinous.

Amy @ No Longer A Dreamer said...

Junk food is my weakness. Holy crap I could eat it all! And then when I do, I feel sick. Like physically sick. And then I eat healthy for a while (like 3 days) and then eat some more junk. Mostly fries or anything with excessive amounts of cheese. I'm really good at ordering 15 bucks worth of food from Arbys just for me. My budget keeps my eating habits in check for me most of the time because when I'm about to order that shake I'm hear this crazy voice saying that $2.59 that can go towards savings or vacation or car payments. UGH responsibility. Kill joy.

I used to use MyFitnessPal a year or two ago. I was doing IIFYM and counting every single macro. Then I got lazy and wasn't seeing the results I wanted so quit. (But on the bright side I found something that works better for me and have considered going back to MFP for kicks.)

Ok, I promise I'm done stalking your blog today =)
