confessions of a weekend food binger

Today for humpday confessions with Kathy we are talking about my weakness. It's a problem. Some might even call it an addiction that might be a stretch. It's not drugs or alcohol or anything like that...BUT it is still not a good thing. Today we are talking about Confessions of a Weekend Binge Eater

That would be me. I am a struggle on the weekends. Here is the thing. I am fairly healthy. During the week I bring my lunches to work. I make my dinners at home. I work out at least 4 days during the work week. I am a healthy person overall. But come weekend. I kind of lose some of my healthy habits. Mostly the eating habits. We tend to save our 'going out to eat' for the weekend. I tend to get a little lax with the food choices I make. Take last weekend for instance. Let's talk about what I ate in one day....one day, people!

Nachos
Chili Cheese Fries
Chicken Strips
Regular Fries
Meat Balls
Beer

Ugh, just typing that is embarrassing to me. *hangs head in shame* It is not even that I am embarrassed of eating unhealthy food. That will happen, it is ok to not have a perfect diet. It's the fact that once I go for something unhealthy I eat all the unhealthy foods. all of them.

So, here is what I am trying to do. I am going to try and be less binge-y (that is probably not a word, but I am using it anyway) on the weekends. I don't want to feel guilty for the poor choices I may make. I don't want to feel like I am playing catch-up every week with my workouts and my eating after the poor choices I made.

Now, I am not saying I will never eat unhealthy foods again. Because that is not realistic or fun. Food is delicious and life is short. What I am going to try and do instead is to be smarter with the weekend choices I make. Instead of eating every item of food on the bar's menu...maybe just pick one, Brooke? Or if I decide to eat an unhealthy meal, make sure the other meals of my day are a better option... Basically, what I am saying is I need to cut myself some slack and not feel bad about eating poor foods once in a while, but also not let one meal derail me and give me the excuse to make poor choices the rest of the weekend.

This week I decided to start tracking my meals and what not in the myfitnesspal app. which is a first for me. I don't normally count calories and to be honest I am not using this app to start counting calories. What I am using it for is to track patterns, see what my meals are made of, pay attention to the amount of food I am actually eating, etc. It's annoying and addicting at the same time. We'll see how long this lasts.

Anyways, I figured why not be honest on the blog with you guys. I know I talk a lot about being healthy and active and working out...which are all things I do and really enjoy, but I also don't want to create this false idea that I am perfect with my choices. I don't always have self control and that is ok.

Cheers!

things I learned over Memorial Day weekend

Happy Tuesday, guys!

I am finally back to blogging after an extra long weekend where I stayed around Portland and had the perfect combination of doing fun things with fun people and doing nothing but laying on the floor (which happens to be my favorite place in the house). Let's check out all the things I learned over Memorial Day weekend.

imyourkatieque

//Golf is not for the impatient type.

//I am very impatient.

//I also hate not being good at things.

//Golf is harder than it looks.

//None of this matters if you have a cool Sponge Bob golf ball and look like a professional golfer with your outfit.

//I just can't say no to new workout clothes, even when I don't need them.

//New workout clothes are extra nice to wear on fun hikes with good people.

//I am slowly getting better at yoga, but attempting happy baby pose in a room full of yogis just makes me uncomfortable.

//Angel's Rest hike is fabulous. The Gorge never lets me down. These pictures don't quite do it justice, but I will post more later this week.

//Thank the sweet baby jesus I was quite active this weekend, because when I was not being active I was eating things like Cajun Tots and Mac n' Cheese Pizza and sushi and everything else under the sun.  That is what Holiday weekends are for right?

Cheers to extra long weekends. Now I have to remember how to work again. Ugh.

Things I learned from easter weekend

Hi Blogland,

I wanted to linkup with Kaite Que and share a few things I learned over Easter weekend.

//First, it is hard to blog when you leave your phone at home all day and that is what all your photos are on. Hence me blogging on a Monday night. Who does that?

//Do not go to Costco the day before Easter. Holy packed. Good lord, sometimes I don't like people. Saturday afternoon before Easter at Costco was one of those times.

//Brunch on a Saturday afternoon is always better when it is with good friends and gravy. Tilt always does it right.

//Ice cream treats after over a month without it tastes better when you eat it on your Friday off from work.

//Portland's Spring Beerfest is always entertaining.

//Easter with family makes my heart happy.

//I always eat too much food at family gatherings.

//If you haven't caught on yet from this post - my life revolves around food.

//Bubbles are still fun to play with when you are 25.

//The Fault In Our Stars is a great post Easter coma read.

Cheers to learning new things!

what it's like to date me

Just wanted to give you a little glimpse into the life of 'I have the pleasure of dating Brooke.' The other day I sent Brad an email asking him to make me this white chicken chili. The email went something along the lines of this:
Dear Brad,
Please make this or I will cut you in your sleep.
Love you.

You know, just your standard love email letter.

Brad proceeds to go to the store the next day to buy ingredients for what I thought was this mouth watering chicken chili and I am out of my mind excited for it. We're talking salsa verde, white beans, chicken goodness here.

I might have even talked this chili up to multiple people throughout the day. I just couldn't contain my excitement. Side Note: I get easily and really emotionally tied to the prospect of good food. Sorry, not sorry.

Fast forward to that afternoon when I ask him how the chili is going... and he informs me that he decided to make a turkey chili instead of THE WHITE CHICKEN CHILI! Hold the phone.

Are you kidding me?!

I might have been just a smidgen disappointed...To the point I told him he might want to sleep with one eye open and then blasted him on multiple forms of social media, including but not limited to, Twitter and Snap Chat. He said I was slandering his good name and gave me multiple excuses as to why he went with the other chili...but ultimately, I was sad and I think this situation deserved shaming.

And before you tell me to stop being irrational, they are both chili, what's the big deal? ... The big deal is they are completely different forms of chili and I had my heart set on the white chicken chili and the highlight of my day was gone forever. First World Problems.

Never mind the fact that the turkey chili he made was delicious, that is besides the point.

The point is... I still want the damn white chicken chili. He better make it for me next week.....OR ELSE.

why blog question mark

Why blog? I often get that question a lot from my non-blogger friends. I also get:

::What's the point of blogging?
::What do you blog about?
::How do you always have content to write about?

.... you get the idea.

For me, what keeps me blogging is wanting to share things that inspire me, things that make me laugh, music that makes me smile, workouts that keep me healthy, and ideas that make me think, with other people.

My biggest blogging 'inspirations' definitely come from small things in my daily life, music, yummy food, fitness, places on the internet like buzzfeed and thought catalog, and most importantly other bloggers you betches are funny. I hope I am half as entertaining as all the blogs I read.

Blogging, although it can be time consuming, keeps me creative and I love that.  It keeps me creative with my non-blogging activities (need to have something to post about later, amiright?!) Creative with my content and writing, and creative with my topics.  Plus, blogging helps take my somewhat average life and forces me to focus on the good that comes with it.

Happy to be linking up with Helene and Sarah today.

What inspires you?!

low key shenans

hmm this weekend. Wish I could say it was jammed packed and exciting, but I can't lie to you people. It wasn't and I was happy about it.  In fact, it was the first weekend I had no real plans in like 3+ months, now that coaching track in Salem is over and my travels to Seattle and San Diego are done and gone (RIP vacation). Needless to say, my life was tired....like to the point I left my vacation suitcase in the living room for more than a day and I NEVER DO THAT.

But never fear I did do a few awesome things.

Sami's Shenanigans

Including::

Happy Hour Friday night at Deschutes with some lovely ladies and some man friends. Then headed over to a different friend's apartment for dinner. Which, side note, my friend's apartment rocked and it had a ton of personality, including cement floors and I want it in my life! Andra is also very DIY-ie and it's not fair, because her DIY touches just add that much more to the place. I really need to step up my game.

Practiced some yoga after a Saturday afternoon run. I want to be able to do this. And yes, I made Brad take a photo so I would have stuff to put on the blog this morning. This is what happens when you have a low key weekend. You have to be creative read pathetic with your weekend photos come Monday.

Brad made Sunday breakfast of banana pancakes (but no really, it was just banana, protein powder, and eggs), turkey bacon, and sausage.

Worked out with my sister on Sunday, as she is slowly getting back in shape after tearing her ACL. Just call me Trainer Babbles.

And did a lot of sleeping. Ok, that last one was me in my first big girl bed, not this weekend, but I still did a lot of sleeping this weekend :)

How was your weekend?!

Cheers,

started from the bottom...

Drake's song Started From The Bottom seems fitting for #backthatazzup Friday and today's last vacation post, seeings how Bradley and I hiked a mountain on our last full day in San Diego.

We started from the bottom...of Lake Poway. See what I did there?!

See that lake way down there. Yeah, that's where we started.

7 plus miles. 2000 plus fee rise in elevation to get to Potato Chip Rock.

To answer your question, no I did not go out on that ledge. There was a line, plus I am not a big of drop offs and ledges or heights.

We did find out own little rock with no line to hang out on though and take some photos.

Mountain Top Meditation.

After hiking we were STARVING!

If you're in Gaslamp and want great fresh fish, check out Escape.  Not a very large menu, but they do things right.

Sangria is a great way to start the meal.

Then we headed onto Salmon Cakes. They were legit, but the highlights of the appetizer were the picked carrots and jícama

For the meal, meal, I ordered locally caught yellow tail tacones.

Whereas Brad ordered the yellow tail grilled featuring a Cajun spice. Both were excellent, although I think mine was better because it was in wrap form.

Mine came with a plate full side of fries and curry ketchup which was delish.

Es-ca-pe. It's spelled just like the word Escape. (Name that movie).

And in case you didn't believe me when I said I ate my way around San Diego here is one last example.

Tuesday morning before we flew back home we grabbed brunch at a place in Point Loma called To The PointSuper cute, super friendly staff, and super great breakfast food.

Not to mention a big ass latte.

Just your simple eggs and meat, but the meat was extra lovely chicken apple sausage.

Brad picked whatever option came in wrap form.

We ate outside, but the inside was adorable.

Ugh, and that officially ends my vacation photos. TAKE ME BACK!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I am sure you are tired of hearing about it, but I just want to keep reliving it.  Good news is, the sun is coming back to Portland for the weekend, so I can just pretend I am at the beach instead of my apartment pool (totally the same thing) Actually, I don't even think our pool is open yet, stupid Oregon weather!!

Cheers,

ate my way around coronado island

I think my favorite day of vacation was our trip to Coronado Island. It is a 15 min ferry or water taxi across the water and we spent the entire day there.  Walked around shops, went to the beach, and ate multiple times throughout the day obviously

Oh whatup multi-million dollar yacht?!

View of downtown San Diego from the water taxi.

Our first stop was food (weird, I know).  We walked to the other side of the island, which was about 10 blocks away and went to a cute little coffee shop / diner called Clayton's

There was a little wait to get in the restaurant, so we got coffee while we waited.

Their coconut chai was quite lovely. Brad got a mango, pineapple smoothie that was also yummy.

The diner area was cute, but small.

Not actually my coffee cup, but I took a picture anyway, because I am a creeper like that.

I went with the Turkey, Bacon, and Lettuce Sammie, but the best part, hands down, was the pickle.

Brad went with the (I think) Rib Eye Panini.

After food we headed over to the beach which was lovely, we proceeded to hang out long enough to get burnt and then left for more food (weird)

Next food stop, Leroy's Kitchen & Lounge for happy hour.

We split the Poke Tacos which featured sashimi and a wonton shell. Yes please.

Their sweet potato fries were no joke.

Since we split both options, we obviously had to walk next door for ice cream.  They say Moo Time Creamery is the best ice cream on the island (not sure who they is). Can't pass that up.

Moooooooooo.

Holy Moly their peanut butter ice cream was probably the best peanut butter ice cream I have ever had.  Rich, creamy, and wonderful.  Plus, the peanut butter flavor wasn't overpowering. Their Espresso was also great!

As you can see, Brad really enjoyed his apple pie flavor.

Double fisting!!

On our walk back to the water taxi we stopped by the community pavilion to listen to a concert that was in honor of Memorial Day. Civil War tunes for days! Being in San Diego during Memorial Day Weekend was awesome, because there is such a large Military presence there. It was quite patriotic.

Perfect ride back to the city that evening.  Each day was so packed with fun things that by the time we would get back to the room we were exhausted in a good way and didn't have many late nights out.  Not that it should surprise anyone, staying up past midnight is late for this grandma.

Come back tomorrow for my last post on SD fun Scout's Honor :)

Cheers!
