awkward turtle

Do you ever get caught eavesdropping on someone else's conversation? No, just me?! Cool...Anyway, the other day I was waiting in line for food... let's be honest I was at Chipotle, no need to hide my love ...and the server was super friendly, which I always appreciate. He asked each person how their evening was going while he was waiting on them, which I always find to be kind.

Here are some acceptable responses when asked a simple question when someone is trying to be cordial:

Δ Thanks for asking, I am doing well
Δ Doing great, super hungry
Δ Little tired, ready to grub
Etc...

Unacceptable answers would be the one that came from the couple behind me.

Chipotle guy: How are you guys tonight?
Girl from the awkward couple: Ugh. Horrible. It's been a bad day...

Crickets, crickets.

Chipotle dood: Ohhhh, sorry to hear that....Why?

Noooooooooooo don't ask. Don't you stick that knife in your leg, Ricky Bobby.

Guy from awkward couple starts to explain. Girl proceeds to get mad at him for airing their dirty laundry when she started it in the first place and says something like, we don't need to talk about it here....BUT we have been arguing allllllllllllllll day. It's not going well.

The worker just stares. says sorry, and proceeds to make their burrito bowl that they are going to share....By the way, who SHARES something at Chipotle?! Whatever, rant for another day.

Here I am so uncomfortable for the poor server, who you know regrets even asking in the first place.

But it got me to thinking. Why are some people so awkward in social situations.  Why can't they pick up on appropriate social cues?! Why don't people catch on to simple protocol and edict when it comes to being in public.

This guy isn't your best friend or therapist...he doesn't want to know you have a crap relationship, so stoppppppppp! Just stop. Stop talking. Stop telling perfectly nice strangers your sob story.  This is why people are rude half the time. They don't want to regret being nice!

Just be normal people. I beg of you. That's it. That's my rant.

Cheers to stupidity!

Holy secondhand embarrassment. I think I would've crawled out and pretended I was invisible.

People who air dirty laundry (especially to random strangers) make me mad!

Poor serving asking 'why?' He should have just said "hope this burrito if yo' MOUF fixes your day"

Oh you KNOW she's the girlfriend who posts her entire life on facebook too. What is wrong with people?

OMG I did this the other day. I felt so awkward but I couldn't help myself. I got a work call on my cell from a vendor while I was at home dealing with my neverending flooring saga and she asked if it was a good time and without thinking I blurted out "No!" Then to make things more awkward I explained why. Oh Lauren. Shut up.

i'm pretty awkward. let's just pretend like i'm not but i don't think i'd do this at chipotle.

This is actually a serious problem I've noticed lately! Some people just CAN NOT act like a normal human being in a social setting! They're awkward which makes everyone around them feel awkward! Sometimes a simple smile and a "fine, thanks" is all anyone is looking for! Learn some social skills, asap! Rant over.

Seriously...I wonder this all of the time. People share way too much info. But the Chipotle guy should not have asked WHY? I mean, come on...

And yay for Chipotle. We are going tomorrow. Can't wait.

Hahaha! Oh no. Did he ask the next people how they were? Or was he too scarred from the previous couple!?

LOL. I wouldn't have asked "why" but said "then i'm going to make you a mad wicked burrito!" and left it at that.

oh god. of all the things that are wrong with this, the fact that they shared chipotle is by far the worst.

Lol! I kinda appreciate the girl being honest, but if I was Chipotle guy, I would have responded with, "I'm sorry to hear that, hopefully I can make you the best burrito bowl you've ever experienced and your day will turn around!"
My motto is: validate people's feelings, but don't join them there!

I totally agree with you! I hate when people make situations so awkward!

I can be pretty awkward at times, but in this case, I think the onus is on the Chipotle guy. He opened a can of worms. He's the awkward one. Angry fighting couples are known to throw social norms out the window.

Ugh, terrible! Whyyy are people so clueless? This is the reason I'm rude half the time. People overshare. And then share some more.

I dunno, I think awkwardness can be adorable or fun. Maybe because I can get awkward. But, I think it's ok to throw away social rules and just be honest sometimes instead of faking it on the surface.

Although maybe if you had kept listening in, we could have figured out if when they were sharing their bowl what was going on- did he give her all the guacamole and she noticed and forgave him because of his generosity? Did they fight over who got the most pieces of meat? Who fights and still shares the same bowl??!

Also, I don't get caught eavesdropping. I am well practiced.

just now seeing your new design!! LOVES it!! Your triangle bullets are adorable! To add to awkward social experiences...my department's executive assistant (and other work peoples in general) thinks it is ok to touch and hug me. News Flash not ok! She is also one of those that will launch into her complaints that you really didn't care to hear. That's what you get for trying to be polite. I live in the South and most of us still go by the one word answers.

Seriously, why do people feel the need to share wayyyy past the appropriate mark?

When I worked retail people did this all the time. Come on peeps.

Can I first just say that I love Chipotle!! (who shares anything there is right--crazy people)
But dear loud some people really need to learn how to get themselves together...

Oh no they didn't. Spewing out your problems like you're on the Dr. Phil show is not cute. I would've slapped them.

That Jenna Marbles gif just made my day, so thanks.
