Tuesday Tunesday :: 12.11.12

Happy, happy Tunesday.  Or if you're in Oregon, it's more a gloomy, want to crawl back in bed with hot chocolate Tunesday.  So if you were looking for something more upbeat, go turn on Britney Spears Pandora, because you won't be finding it here today.  I blame my cold and the weather, but I am definitely in more of a low key music mood today.  Hope you are too!

Ed Sheeran :: Kiss Me

I have really been on an Ed Sheeran kick the past few weeks, so it made my day when Vampire Diaries had this song on a recent episode.  (Yes, I watch VD. No, I don't care if you judge me for it.)

The Staves :: Mexico

Big fan of this British sister trio.  Thinking you should be too.  Their harmonies are lovely.

Iron & Wine :: Waiting For A Superman

This song is not new, in fact it isn't even Iron & Wine's song.  It's a Flaming Lips cover. But Iron & Wine makes a song go from good to hauntingly beautiful and that, my friends, takes talent.

Of Monsters and Men :: King and Lionheart

If you've been following Tunesday for a moment now, you will know my love for Of Monsters and Men.  This session is just another reason why I love them so. I mean there is a trumpet in a living room.  Can't go wrong there.

The Lumineers :: KEXP Session

This last one is a treat for you guys.  I saw the Lumineers live last week.  They rock.  Here is 20 + mins of them :) The according player is my favorite, obvs.  Plus, any music that features a lot of hey and ho is good music.

Enjoy!

Tuesday Tunesday :: 12.4.12

Since I went festive the past two Tunesdays, I have been stocking up on music to share!!!  This translates to - you get a lot of awesome music this week. Get excited!

Ed Sheeran :: Swim Good (Frank Ocean Cover)
Big fan of Ed Sheeran, so when I saw he covered Frank Ocean, I knew I would enjoy.  It did not disappoint.

Matt Corby :: Brother
This Australian is a little bit of an odd-ball, but I just can't stop listening to him.

The Cave Singers :: Swim Club
I, personally, think The Cave Singers are under-appreciated, but what do I know?

Local Natives :: Breakers
EVERYONE SHOULD BE SO EXCITED (we, we, we so excited)  FOR THE NEW LOCAL NATIVES ALBUM COMING OUT IN JANUARY!

Kelley James :: Crazy / Magic (Mashup)
I had the opportunity to see Kelley James perform in the living room of my Sorority in college and then again when I lived in California.  He has so much skill and somehow manages to make acoustic free-style sound oh-so lovely.

Tegan and Sara :: Closer
Mad respect for my favorite lesbian, twin duo. This is the new video to their latest single.

Ed Sheeran feat. Wretch32 :: Hush Little Baby
Yeah this is another Ed Sheeran jam and I don't even feel bad about it.  Enjoy.

Maverick Sabre :: I Need
People in the UK do things right.  Here is another example.

Enjoy!!!

11.13.2012

Tuesday Tunesday :: 11.13.12

Happy Tuesday, Folks! Enjoy your Tunes.

Shannon McArthur :: Chuck Taylor

I think every 15 year old 'emo' girl in her ChuckT's and I enjoy this song.  I am not even embarrassed by that and I probably should be.

Marius Ziska :: All The Good I Know

All the good I know, I'll give to you. Big fan of these lyrics.

Swim Deep :: Honey (Love Thy Brother Remix)

Going a different route the second half of this Tunesday with some upbeat tunes, starting with this electronic jam.

French Kiwi Juice :: Lying Together

Keeping it going with the French Kiwi Juice (how fun is that name?!).   This song just makes me dance a little.  It's fresh and funky.

Kendrick Lamar feat. Lady Gaga :: Bitch, Don't Kill My Vibe

Betch, don't kill the vibe.  What's more to say?

Janelle Monáe feat. Big Boi :: Tightrope

Wrapping things up with Janelle's hot track featuring a fave, Big Boi.  Janelle does not apologize for doing her own thing and I love everything about her.

Enjoy your Tuesday!

Tuesday Tunesday :: 11.6.12

Happy Election Day!!!  I have gathered some great music for you to help celebrate the end of political ads and harsh rhetoric.  But in all honesty, I hope you did your part and made yourself an educated voter, no matter which way you leaned.  At the end of the day, if you don't educate yourself and then vote, you don't get the right to complain after the fact.  Cheers to having the opportunity to make a difference.

Anywayyyyyy, on to way more important things than the future of the economy... music, duh ;)

the lighthouse and the whaler :: under mountain, under ground

This song is lovely and anytime I can find a KEXP version of a song I jump on it, hard.

lord huron :: end of the earth

Came across this lad last week, I think on the Lumineers' Pandora, but I can't remember now (cool story, I know).  Either way, I like what's going on here.  Plus this YouTube comment made me laugh:

just heard this on KCRW-LA. What beautiful sound. Can't wait to get your CD and ride through the desert at night.  -HVYMETL

Can I join you, HVYMETL?!

theophilus london feat. sara quin :: why even try

The dude is from London and Sara Quin is one half of Tegan and Sara.  Yes please!

mumford & sons :: lover of the light

Look guys, it's Stringer Bell. (That only applies to people who have watched The Wire)  The rest of you will have to just enjoy the video without imaging that Stringer Bell lost his eye sight in a drug related street crime!

flume feat. anthony for cleopatra :: sleepless

And lastly, for your electronica fix I leave you with this.  Enjoy.

Cheers to the last of the Political ads!

Tuesday Tunesday :: 10.30.12

Happy Tuesday! Here are some tunes to get you through dealing with that bz Sandy. (Unless you're on the East Coast without power, then for that I say sorry, folks)

yuna :: thinkin' bout you

This gal opened for Allen Stone last week at Mississippi Studios and did this awesome cover.  The loops are fantastic.

tingsek :: goodbye

Tingsek also opened for Allen Stone last week and it makes sense why.  They both have that hippie/soul vibe going on.  Plus, he is from Sweden, so you know he's cool.

nude beach :: some kinda love

Brad hooked me up with this video, the song is catchy and make sure you actually watch the video, the commentary that comes with is quite entertaining.

dead man's bones :: in the room where you sleep

I mean 1 part Ryan Gosling (it's his band in case you were not aware he has a band). 1 part creepy Halloween vibe, ya dig?

yellow red sparks :: happiness comes in a box

Yellow Red Sparks opened for ZZ Ward last week. I enjoyed them.

Lastly, I don't think this is up on YouTube yet, but if you like a good stripped down performance check out this latest Tiny Desk Concert from Passion Pit over on NPR.  Good stuff.

Cheers to Tunesday, but not to Sandy!

10.23.2012

Tuesday Tunesday :: 10.23.12

Feeling pretty giving this week when it comes to Tunesday!  Either that or there has just been a lot of music I have been digging this past week.  Enjoy!

Bruno Mars :: Locked Out of Heaven

Bruno has a new album coming out in December.  Not a huge fan of him, but then sometimes I secretly enjoy his stuff.  This is one of those songs. Also, does the beginning remind anyone else of The Police?

The xx :: Chained

Official video for The xx's latest single.  great stuff and the video is typical The xx.  A little odd, but alotta good.

 MØ :: Pilgrim.

Stole this one from Dirty Laces - which by the way you should check out the site.  Fellow WU grads help run it.

Pepper Rabbit :: Allison

There is not a lot to this song, but I think that may be why I enjoy it as much as I do?

Maps & Atlases :: Old & Gray

The lyrics. Lovely.

Dolorean :: What Could You Do?

Found this song while watching last week's Grey's Anatomy.  Sometimes the show is a little questionable, but the music never is.

The Barr Brothers :: Beggar In The Morning

This song came on during the drive back from Seattle and it reminded me how much I enjoy the Barr Brothers.

Cheers to Tunesday!

10.16.2012

Tuesday Tunesday :: 10.16.12

Happy Tunesday!

Now that fall is dwindling down and the winter gloom is about to be upon us, my music taste is slowly matching the seasonal change.  Don't worry though, my music will not be depressing make you want to slit your wrists but instead, just a little more fally/wintery. Stuff that makes you want to curl up with a book and a fire place, ya feel me?!

jason mraz :: the woman i love

With Jason Mraz I am either a love or hate kind of gal. Definitely lovin' this live version.

the joy formidable :: this ladder is ours

See guys, not all the songs I enjoy are slow and depressing.

matt corby :: untitled

The dood is from Australia, so that's fun.  Plus this is super pretty and raw, almost a Jeff Buckley quality to his ways.

fink :: this is the thing (mahogany session)

Big Fink fan, have been for a while and this stripped down, acoustic version of This Is The Thing is awesome.

And lastly, in honor of her new album out today....

zz ward :: put the gun down

Fellow Glide High graduate doing big, big things.  Check her album out on iTunes. You won't regret it.  Her voice is powerful and she has a great mix of blues and hip hop.  Def her own vibe and sound.  Loving all of it.

Cheers to Tunesday!

Tuesday Tunesday :: 10.9.12

Hellllllllo All,

Just a few items to take care of this morning before the music.  Mom - if you click on the title of the song it will now send you to the YouTube link, since your Kindle Fire won't play it directly from the blog site. Okay, that was all, business has been attended to. Carry On.....

William Elliott Whitmore :: Hell Or High Water

My dear friend Courtney shared this artist with me and I am a big fan.  His raspy voice is everything I love, plus he can play the banjo and who doesn't love that!?

Kodaline :: All I Want

Depressing. Beautiful.  What's more to say?

Ellie Goulding feat. Calvin Harris - I Need Your Love

Gosh, I just love her voice and Calvin Harris is holding his own as usual. Just makes you want to get your dance on.

Jon Bellion :: Paper Planes

I mean the guy has pipes and then out of no where he does that whole I am going to rap at you, but kind of still be talking and yet it works.  I dig it.

Fedde Le Grand :: So Much Love

*If* I ever did drugs, I would want to do them at a festival like that. Music. Dancing. Energy.  (side note: don't worry family, I am not doing drugs, nor do I intend to pick the habit up any time soon.)

Ron Pope :: I Do Not Love You

The title is deceiving.  You are so sneaky RPope. Keeping us on our toes.  Can't get enough of him after the concert.

Macklemore & Ryan Lewis feat. Mary Lambert :: Same Love

I have posted this song before, but last week Macklemore released the official video.  All I can say is both the message and the video are moving.  (Plus, I am seeing him live on Thursday). Double Win!

Cheers to Tunesday!

Clarence Greenwood Concert!

...or if you're not a super fan, you might know him better as Citizen Cope! Sunday night Bradley and I decided to be young for a change and stayed out late on a school night to see Citizen Cope perform at the Crystal Ballroom.

If you have not had the pleasure of listening to Citizen Cope, help me, help you:

Hurricane Waters

Holdin' On

Like always, Clarance did not disappoint.  You see, I can call him by his first name, because he and I go way back.  Let me tell you all the ways:

:: I have seen him live a total of 5 times and counting

:: I own all of his albums

:: We have had a conversation.  Ok, not quite a convo, buttt it was right before the 2008 elections and I was wearing an Obama tee.  Clarance def gave me a shout out for it while he was on stage.  Totally could have gotten on the bus that night if I wanted to.

:: I have seen him perform with both his full band and solo acoustic shows.

:: Sunday night we had matching Chambray shirts.

:: I have been this close to him at a concert:

Moral of the story: we are in love.

The Crystal Ballroom was rocking Sunday night.  He had a mix of his full band and solo dolo acoustic.  Tickets were only $25.00, so it was not overpriced, seeings how he played for a solid two hours with the encore and it was heaven.  The only down side was the fact that I am old and standing room-only concerts are hard on my back, not to mention my bedtime.  Work came early Monday morning, but it was totally worth it.

If you ever get a chance to see him live, I really suggest you do it.  Now, I know you're thinking to yourself, gee self, Brooke tells me I should see a lot of bands live, I am starting to think she is going overboard. ...Because let's face it - I do say this a lot (because I have amazing taste and see a lot of fantastic artists live), but I reallllllllly mean it when it comes to Citizen Cope, you will not regret going to his show.

Cheers to C. Cope!

10.02.2012

Tuesday Tunesday :: 10.2.12

Happy Tunesday! Enjoy :)

Love is a Fire :: Courrier

I love a song that gradually picks up intensity.  Just kind of keeps building on itself.  This one does that. Wait for it, wait for it...

The Paper Kites :: Bloom

I have been a fan of The Paper Kites for a little while, this song is not new, but I love their voices together.  Plus, their videos are always interesting too, check out Featherstone while you're at it.

Zee Avi :: Concrete Walls

Might have found this on Gossip Girls the other day when I was catching up on Netflix.  Don't judge me or do, I don't really care.  I can't get enough of the Upper East Side drama! Serena is being a total betch right now.

Freelance Whales :: Girl U Want

They have a new CD that just came out and it's good, this song is not on it. Sorry for the tease haha.  This is a legit cover though!

Lastly, because I am celebrating a good friend's birthday on Thursday with a Ron Pope concert I will leave you with this gem:

Ron Pope :: A Drop In The Ocean

Also, fun fact, I picked this video because Bradley made it for a class in college haha.  He is so talented, look how he mixed the two together.  With that being said, I have loved this song for years and the movie is one of my favorites.

Cheers to Tunesday!

9.18.2012

Tuesday Tunesday :: 9.18.12

Happy Tunesday!!!!!!

First up...

Rags + Ribbons :: The Marks You Make

Willamette Alumni holding it down with this video.  Plus it is at one of my fav venues in pdx, Mississippi Studios.

Up Next we have...

Stars :: Hold On When You Get Love And Let Go When You Give It

My old track coach (I say old, as in past tense, once was my coach, not old as in Grandpa status), now life coach sent me this new Stars single, which I was excited about.  I have been a Stars fan since college and this album does not disappoint.

And then there is Muse...

Muse :: Madness

This is one of those songs that has layers.  It just keeps adding layer after layer of goodness.  It is also one of those songs that I have to listen to at least 2 times in a row, because I just didn't get enough of it the first time.

In the Acoustic Corner we have...

Bad Books :: Forest Whitaker

Andy Hull of Bad Books has it going on, in what looks to be a kitchen?

Here we have a band that I have a very love/hate relationship with...

Right Away, Great Captain :: Father Brian Finn

Love the band, because they make beautiful music - but their music is often so sad it could make you cry.  Win some, lose some, I guess.

And lastly, just because this is the best. song. ever.  and even though I have posted about it before here and here I am leaving you with:

PSY :: Gangnam Style:

Cheers to Tunesday!

9.11.2012

Tuesday Tunesday :: 9.11.12

First off, it's the brother bear's birthday today (and the mother's is tomorrow) so this obvs needs to happen:

Happy Birthday, Brannon and Mom :)

Next,

Stars Academy - Myles and Kolton :: I Won't Give Up (Cover)

Found this song online yesterday, you can thank me when it blows up all over the internet and you already knew about it.

Passenger :: Let Her Go

I have had Passenger on the blog before, and then this song came on during my drive to work today. The lead singer of Passenger has such a great, unique voice.  It makes my heart swoon.

Van Morrison & Ray Charles :: Crazy Love

An oldie, but goodie that also came on during my drive to work.  If Van Morrison and Ray Charles doesn't make your heart melt, then you're doing it wrong.

Capital Cities :: Safe & Sound

This song will get you moving and if you're into remixes check out this one, it's catchy.

Lastly,

Dave Barnes :: Nothing Fancy

I love this song.  Just like the lyrics say, there is nothing fancy to the song, but that's what makes it beautiful.

Cheers to Tunesday!

Because It Feels Like Tunesday :: 9.5.12

I think one of my favorite things about music is there is something for every mood and every season.  With Labor Day already gone I am falling in love with Fall all over again.  It's definitely my favorite season with crisp morning air and warm days... Not to mention the pretty leaves and Pumpkin Spice Lattes from Starbucks.  With all that being said when Fall rolls around I notice my music taste changing with the leaves as well.  Here are a few songs that are transitioning me into fall and preparing me for a long winter.

Sean Hayes :: Miss Her When I'm Gone

My friend Creshea and I share a love for Sean Hayes (because we both have awesome taste)...annnnnnd who doesn't miss me when they're out making money. Duh.

Imaginary Cities :: Where'd All The Living Go (Berlin Session)

My dear friend Courtney told me about this band and the lead singer's voice fits perfectly with my love for whiny and raspy voices.

AnnenMayKantereit :: Leaving (Cardinal Session)

Such a big voice, for a little man.

Deep Sea Diver :: 1972 (Berlin Session)

Evidently there is more than one band named Deep Sea Diver.  Who knew?! Whatever the case, I like this one :)

Julia Stone :: It's All Okay (Mahogany Session)

Julia Stone is usually part of the brother/sister duo Angus & Julia Stone, but she also dabbles in some solo work.  Her voice is lovely and super unique, and it makes me want to curl up in a blankie.

William Fitzsimmons :: Beautiful Girl (Berlin Session)

Gosh, what to say about Mr. Fitz.. He has been through some 'ish depression, etc., but with all that pain comes some of the most beautiful music.  He also puts on an amazing live show, do yourself a favor and see him and his beard live if you get the chance.

Cheers to Fall! (and cheers to acoustic sessions too, I am sure you have caught on to my love for them by now)!

8.14.2012

Tuesday Tunesday :: 8.14.12

Happy Tunesday! Sorry this is coming late.  My day has been busy and random - the internet at work was down so I was working from Starbucks and got to have a lunch date at Nike (which hardly ever gets to happen) and then I had to get my fitness on, but better late than never right?!

Anyway, here are a few tunes to get you ready for bedtime.  (t-minus 1 hour).

The Staves :: The Motherlode // Mahogany Session

This song reminds me of fall and I am okay with that.

The xx :: Chained

Another new The xx song...enjoy - so pumped for their new album.

Mumford & Sons :: I Will Wait

What even needs to be said about new Mumford besides, thank you, boys!?

White Arrows :: Get Gone

The lead singer's voice is kind of winey and I dig it.

Steve Everett :: West Coast Time

This song is precious and it makes me want to snuggle. Perfect for bedtime!

Cheers to Tunesday!

8.07.2012

Tuesday Tunesday :: 8.7.12

'Ello Mates.  It's Tuesday, so you all know what that means: Tunesday!  And I would like to say how special I felt when I received a text at 6:37 this AM reminding me it was Tunesday (Thanks Amer!).  If the people want the music, then the music they will get.  Shall we?.....

Ghost Beach :: Miracle

First off we have this song that I just came across yesterday.  It's a great summer jam, which is fitting since I refuse to be one of those people who is already acknowledging fall.  #summer4life

Passion Pit :: Conversations (St. Lucia Remix)

Like I have said before, I love a good remix.

The Easter Sea :: The Match

Give this one a chance to warm up.  It just keeps getting better and better.

Gary Clark Jr.  :: Bright Lights

Any time you shazam a song twice in one day and not realize it was the same one, you know it's that good or you're just a dummie!  It has a gritty vibe that I totally dig.

Trails and Ways :: Nunca

This tune is catchy and this video is quite entertaining too! So it's a win, win, win as Michael Scott would say.

Hoodie Allen :: Hey Now

Hoodie does it again! Heyyyo!

And lastly, one of my favorite John Mayer songs (written before he started wearing these hats):

John Mayer :: In Your Atmosphere

Cheers to Tunesday!

#BurfdayWeek Edition:

Just a few songs I have had on repeat this week.  Alternative Playlist Title:  It's A Celebration, Betches!

Macklemore x Ryan Lewis feat. Mary Lambert :: Same Love

Have been listening to this song over and over and over you get it .... I will let Macklemore speak for himself on this song.  It's powerful to say the least.  Also, if you buy the single on iTunes right now all proceeds go towards the right for Marriage Equality in Washington and I can get on board with that:

This song, which I wrote in April, is a response to what I have observed and experienced, and is also an act of personal accountability. It was not easy to write, and I struggled with how I, as a straight male, could genuinely speak upon this issue.

Initially, I tried writing from the perspective of a gay, bullied kid, but after getting some feedback, I felt it wasn’t my story to tell. What I do know, and where I wrote from, is my own perspective growing up in a culture where “that’s gay” was commonplace, with a huge stigma on those who identified and were perceived as gay.

Growing up in the Catholic Church, I saw first-hand how easily religion became a platform for hate and prejudice. Those who “believed” were excused from their own judgments, bypassing the stark issue of basic civil rights.

But, more influential to me as a kid than the church was hip hop, my cultural foundation that influenced my worldview.

Unfortunately, intolerance of the gay community in hip hop is widespread. The best rappers will use homophobic language on albums that critics rave about, making hip hop and homophobia inextricably linked. We have sidestepped the issue entirely, become numb to the language that we use, and are increasingly blinded to our own prejudice.

The consequence and impact of what we say, and the culture of shame and abuse it creates, has very real, sometimes deadly impacts upon LGBTQ young people looking for acceptance and belonging.

As somebody that believes in equal rights for all humans, you can only watch poison regurgitated for so long.

I am not saying that intolerance is exclusive to hip hop. Hip hop culture is a part of American culture, and America can be scared, fearful, and prejudiced against its own. My intent is not to scrutinize or single out hip hop. It happens to be the culture that has profoundly shaped me, and the one I feel most accountable to.

Hip hop is influential to young people, and frames the mindset of the generation that will decide how inclusive and accepting we are.

More than anything, I am aware of how comfortable I (and many other straight people) have become in staying silent on this issue. If we choose to not speak on an issue of injustice out of fear, or how our peers might perceive us, we’re part of the problem. We know the truth, and vainly refuse to uphold it, when people’s lives are caught in the balance.

In the last couple of months, amazing things have happened that show progress and accountability to ensure that the LGBTQ community has the same rights and respect as everyone else. THE PRESIDENT OF THE UNITED STATES came out in support of gay marriage.  Jay-Z, arguably the biggest rapper in the world, then followed.  Finally, Frank Ocean felt comfortable enough with himself to share his sexuality in his music and came out last week.  That is courage.

This song is a humble submission to help bring this conversation to the surface, so that we can reflect on the language we use, and how powerful it can be. Rethinking, and understanding the gravity of how we communicate with each other. Change happens when dialogue happens. When we confront our prejudice and are honest with ourselves, there is room for growth, and there is room for justice.
After I wrote this song, I played it for a friend of mine who happened to be involved with the Music for Marriage Equality campaign, uniting musicians to help Washington state become the very first to approve marriage equality by a public vote in November.

My hope is that my personal testimony can help in some way to not only advance the dialogue and approve Referendum 74, but also to help shape a culture of belonging in which ALL people are equal.
- Macklemore

“If you have come here to help me, you are wasting your time. But if you have come because your liberation is bound up with mine, then let us work together.” – Lilla Watson

*Also, huge shout out to the incredibly talented Mary Lambert. Such a blessing to work with her on this song.

Of Monsters & Men :: Little Talks (Passion Pit Remix)

You probably caught on to my love for Of Monsters & Men here,  What you may not know about me is my love for a good remix.  Lucky for you, this one is legitskis.

Matt & Kim :: Let's Go

Matt & Kim are the perfect summer time music.  They are also coming out with a new album soon. Happy birthday to me. (Sadly, it's not actually out until October, but the single will suffice for now!)

Mike Stud :: Glad you Came (Remix)

Huge bro crush on Mike Stud. That is all.  #SundayStudDay

2 Chainz feat. Kanye West :: Birthday Song

Lastly, going along with my #burfdayweek theme, this is a jam.  I think Ye says it best with the verse: 'It's my birthday, I deserve to be greedy, huh?'   #thuglife

Cheers to Celebration Playlists!
